MEET THE ABBEYS

In February of 1992, three gentlemen gathered to change the course of aca-history. Their goal: to create an all-male a cappella group at Boston University. After several attempts—and a few close calls—the Dear Abbeys of Boston University were born. The idea was simple: assemble a small group of men who enjoy music, camaraderie and “no show-tunes”, arrange popular songs for voice, and sing.

Now—over 25 years later—the Abbeys have gained a reputation in the a cappella community for musical precision, complex and unique arrangements and an energetic style of live performance that’s difficult to match. After winning the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA’s) in 2005, the Abbeys have performed in stadiums, on street corners and everywhere in between. Their unique style is frequently heard at weddings, corporate events, charity functions, high schools, and the greater Boston community.

Most recently, the group has focused on sharing their talents with students around the country. The Abbeys aim to inspire, inform and entertain—introducing young thinkers to the arts with the hope of initiating positive change. The group has toured the U.S. and beyond, traveling to Florida and California, Alaska and Colombia. In the past they have been so lucky as to team up with musical heavyweights like Steven Tyler, Ben Folds, NOTA, Pentatonix and Ball in the House. To date, the Abbeys have produced ten studio albums. Check out our latest album, Songs For Mary Todd, now available on Apple Music and Spotify!

MEET THE ABBEYS

JEFF WANG - ‘19 | PRESIDENT Jeff Wang is as chill as California (where he's from) but as strong as Boston. Jeff loves the great outdoors, so when he’s not singing, you can find him in his natural state- stoking a fire somewhere in the woods. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and trusted by Metro Boomin, Jeff Wang is surely a force to be reckoned with.

Jeff Wang is as chill as California (where he's from) but as strong as Boston. Jeff loves the great outdoors, so when he’s not singing, you can find him in his natural state- stoking a fire somewhere in the woods. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and trusted by Metro Boomin, Jeff Wang is surely a force to be reckoned with.

ERIC SHUREN - ‘20 | MUSIC DIRECTOR

In a far off kingdom in the Hudson Valley of New York, Eric, the big friendly giant, was born! Coming in at 6'4", he used his height to his advantage when he had to play as an enchanted tree in his high school's musical, Into The Woods. As a pre-med student, he aspires to connect medicine and music as a form of therapy.

ELI ELMAN - ‘19 | BUSINESS MANAGER

Eli is a senior in Questrom studying finance. Outside of class, Eli enjoys taking quick trips to Israel and working for College AppAssist, a non-profit where Eli mentors a student at Brighton High School. Upon graduation, Eli is excited to join Silicon Valley Bank as an Associate.

WILL BURNETT - ‘21 | MARKETING DIRECTOR

Born two decades ago just before the rise of double-denim, Britney Spears, and Fairly Odd Parents, Will grew up in the beautiful city of Boston - and it looks like he stayed! Whether he’s in the CFA basement, or… well, the CFA basement, he’s waiting for the T, ordering a large iced at Pavement, or majoring in Advertising with a minor in Art.

JACK HUMPHREY - ‘21 | TREASURER

New York City kid Jack can be found chilling in the lazy river at FitRec or devouring some Americone Dream ice cream. As a voice major, he has decided to fill his schedule with even more singing because he's tone deaf and needs to practice.

MATT FALCONE - ‘19

All the way from Hollis, NH - an active farming community with only one stop light, Matt is our o.g. comeback kid. His state motto is 'live free or die' and he embraces it to the max. He surfs in the summers, skis in the winters and hikes year round. Fun fact - the way to his heart is with dumplings.

BRENDAN KELLEY - ‘20 | TREASURER

Brendan was born in the back of a trailer park deep within the wooded wilderness of rural southern Kentucky. Throughout his youth, he was subjected to teachings of the Real Truths of the World, including the true age of the Earth (6000 years old) and the preposterousness of the theory of evolution. Somehow, he managed to sneak his way, undetected, into Boston University, and now shouts melodic notes at strangers with 12 other young men.

MATTYAR ALBORZI - ‘20

Mattyar is just a small town boy living in a lonely world who took a midnight train to Boston from New Jersey to study film. When he isn't watching movies he's probably stuffing his face with food, listening to music, or polishing his Wendy's keychain.

ANTOINE BAIZE - ‘21

Antoine is a sophomore studying biomedical engineering in the college of engineering. When not in rehearsal you can find Antoine exploring the streets of Boston on his never ending quest to find the best cup of coffee in the city.

DEVIN HUBBARD - ‘21

Devin was born in Kansas City, Missouri and journeyed by electric scooter when he was only 6 months old all the way to Massachusetts where he was raised. Devin likes the finer things in life, such as sand, grains of salt, and dust particles. He is also an Earth & Environmental Science major, which means he likes rocks, plants, water, and other things.

FINN DAVIDSON - ‘21

Coming all the way from the backwoods of Connecticut, Finn journeyed to Boston to prove his skill as a Pokémon trainer on his quest to catch 'em all. When he is not running from his responsibilities you can find at this Abbey sleeping or doing kendama tricks at the BU beach.

NEIL BAKER - ‘22

This Australian has quickly found out what the definition of cold really is. Originally from Sydney, Neil enjoys math, playing piano, and riding Kangaroos. Sushi, Taekwondo, and conversations about Chopin and Rachmaninoff are surefire ways to his heart.

the audition process

Our auditions are pretty casual - come chat with us, get to know us, and then sing a little something!

Our Music Director will lead you through warm-ups/vocal exercises and then we’ll have you sing the verse and chorus of a song you feel showcases your voice best.

We recommend that you avoid show-tunes, as they do not reflect the group’s vocal style. To get an idea of what type of songs we do perform, check out our Spotify account, The Dear Abbeys, to hear some recordings.

Auditions for the SPRING 2019 SEMESTER :
